Testifying earlier this week, in a sitting related to the vitals inquiry, expert Samuel Sittlington, which had also been engaged as an expert in the Progress Press case, apart from other enquiries revealed that Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa’ had sought him to train police recruits in financial crime techniques.
Following this revelation, lawyers of Keith Schembri, former chief of staff to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, along with two associates, filed an urgent application questioning the impartiality of forensic experts involved in their money laundering case related to Progress Press.
Their legal team argued that this relationship as described by the expert, raises concerns about the experts’ impartiality and integrity.
The defense has requested the judge to scrutinize the potential conflicts of interest among the forensic experts.
