WHO official calls for restrictions on smartphone use for youth

A senior official at the World Health Organization has advocated for restrictions on the use of smartphones and other handheld devices by young people, citing the potential harm they pose.

Dr. Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat, WHO Director of the Division of Country Health Policies and Systems, drew a parallel between excessive device use and tobacco addiction, suggesting that measures such as age limits and “no-go zones” could be implemented to mitigate these risks.

Similar to smoking bans in certain areas, Azzopardi-Muscat proposes restricting access to devices in specific settings to protect youth from the negative consequences of excessive digital engagement.
