Our new series, Metsola Gets Trumped, delves into the European Union’s political landscape post Donald Trump’s US election victory.
The European Union was closely monitoring the developments of the United States presidential elections with a sense of apprehension.
The potential implications of the outcome on the bloc’s policies, ranging from trade agreements to digital regulations, are significant.
Of particular concern is the impact on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where any disruption could have far-reaching consequences.
Trump’s vocal opposition to American aid to Ukraine has raised alarms within the EU, especially when he attempted to influence the allocation of military supplies by advocating for a loan structure over a grant.
Looks like Metsola just got Trumped. Why?
Roberta Metsola throughout her term as President of the European Parliament supported and pushed Ukraine to continue with the war against Russia.
Throughout her term as President of the European Parliament, Metsola has been a strong advocate for Ukraine’s military efforts against Russia, emphasizing the need for weapons. However, what Ukraine truly needs is peace, not an escalation of arms.
In September 2022, in one of her addresses in Berlin, Metsola said “Most of its [Ukraine] defence industry has been decimated, but many of our Member States have stepped in which is why Kyiv was preserved in March. But in this next phase of war, heavy armoury will be required. Tanks are needed and we must be able to take that next step.”
How can she be so blind to the truth?
