Regarding the investigation into the Swiss account held by the former transport minister, Austin Gatt. It resulted in a hefty €29,000 penalty due to unpaid taxes resulting from incorrectly claimed ministerial expense allowances.
The investigation was initially prompted by some pesky newspaper reports during the 2013 election campaign. Oh, those Labour Party reporters and their probing questions!
It turns out that our dear Mr. Agostino Pio Gatt had conveniently forgotten to mention his Swiss account, which he inherited from his parents. Of course, he assured us that there had been no transactions for over 40 years. How convenient!
In a delightful twist, Austin Gatt later decided to enlighten us in writing that he never declared any income from the UBS account because he never received any interest or other income.
Well, isn’t that just the cherry on top of this whole debacle?
