USAID Closure and Restructuring: Presidential Approval and Future Outlook (1)

President Donald Trump has signed off on shutting down USAID, with Secretary Rubio assuming the role of acting administrator.

In his letter to lawmakers, Secretary Rubio delegated authority to Pete Marocco, a Trump appointee with previous experience at USAID. The aim of this reorganization is to maximize efficiency and align operations with the national interest. As such, the Department of State will be working closely with Congress and relevant committees to ensure a smooth transition.

It is important to note that USAID may undergo significant changes, including the integration of certain missions, bureaus, and offices into the Department of State. The remaining functions of the Agency may be abolished in accordance with applicable law.

USAID Overview

Established in the early 1960s, USAID administers humanitarian aid programmes on behalf of the US government worldwide. With around 10,000 employees, two-thirds of whom work overseas, USAID operates in over 60 countries and collaborates with numerous organisations to carry out its work.

One of USAID’s key functions is providing food assistance in countries facing starvation. Additionally, the agency operates a famine detection system that utilises data analysis to anticipate emerging food shortages.

President Trump has been a vocal critic of overseas spending and has singled out USAID for particularly strong criticism. This has led to a pause in almost all international spending for 90 days, causing widespread disruption to services in the world of international development.
