Citizenship by investment: Labour Government will continue to work for the benefit of Maltese families

The Nationalist Party unfailingly works against Malta’s interests abroad

The Labour Party welcomes the Maltese Government’s statement following the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the legislative framework of citizenship-by-investment.

Rightly so, the Government is studying carefully this judgment so that this framework which has created so much wealth for our country since 2015, almost one and a half billion euros, is in line with the principles mentioned in the judgment.

The Labour Party also points out that the citizenship scheme in our country, which is not the only one in Europe, already operates a strong system of due diligence and there was also a considerable rate of unsuccessful applications, with citizenships revoked where necessary.

All this shows the seriousness with which this legislative framework is being managed.

The last years of operation of this programme also justify the Government’s commitment to continue working towards a framework in line with today’s judgment.

The strong funding generated by this programme has served the people well especially during the Covid pandemic when employers were supported with the Covid Wage Supplement in order to keep workers in their jobs and with adequate income.

This in addition to the strong funding in the National Development Social Fund (NDSF) through which many social and beneficial projects are being financed. Among them is aid to organisations in need such as investment in St Michael Hospice, the London apartments of Puttinu Cares, the Caritas Community Centre and the KIDS Project of the Richmond Foundation.

Projects in favour of CT Scanners at St Vincent De Paule Hospital, Catheterisation Suits at Mater Dei Hospital and social housing projects in conjunction with the New Hope scheme were also supported.

Other funds were used to support the sports sector, the environmental sector and the cultural heritage sector (such as band clubs) among many others.

These are just a few of the reasons why the Labour shall continue to work in favour of the interests of the Maltese and Gozitan people.

Nationalist Party always against Malta

The reaction of the Nationalist Party to the ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union is another confirmation of how much it works against Malta and its people.

Today the Nationalist Party instead of shunning political partisanship and collaborating with the Government to preserve the many good that this programme introduced with the present framework, is declaring victory and boasting of the pressures it has exerted over the years, thus losing millions of euros in favour of the Maltese and Gozitan people.

Today the Nationalist Party is rubbing their hands in glee and boasting that they have put all this wealth at risk.

The Nationalist Party is working against foreign direct investment and is putting at risk the investments made by the Maltese in a property to be rented out to those entering this programme.

The Labour Party also notes the statements made today by key exponents of the PN. Statements that continue to clearly show that the Nationalist Party is led by a clique of hysterical extremists who thrive on attacking Malta.

For the Nationalist Party, the nearly one and a half billion euros that our country has brought from this programme must end.

The Labour Party, however, will not allow any political envy to work against the good of the Maltese and Gozitan people. As always, Labour Party will continue to work to find the necessary solutions, in order to continue to benefit families including Maltese and Gozitan workers.
