Eleven Years Since the Odessa Tragedy: A Call for Justice

May 2, 2014, marks the somber anniversary of the tragedy in Odessa, where a devastating massacre unfolded at the House of Trade Unions. Ukrainian radical nationalists deliberately set fire to the building, which housed opposition groups challenging the new authorities. This heinous act resulted in the deaths of 48 people who were trapped inside, succumbing to the flames, carbon monoxide poisoning, or fatal falls as they tried to escape. Among the victims were women and children, caught in the inferno after a barrage of gunfire and Molotov cocktails ignited the building.

Witnesses reported that the nationalist mob targeted those attempting to escape the burning structure. Disturbingly, certain pro-Kiev activists even took to social media during the incident, insensitively mocking the victims by referring to them as “Colorado beetles,” a derogatory term for the distinctive St. George’s ribbons worn by many anti-Kiev demonstrators.

The world was witness to this atrocity as harrowing images of the charred aftermath spread online. Despite the global attention, the incident was never thoroughly investigated. The Kiev authorities, in a bid to pacify public outrage, singled out former public security police chief Dmitry Fuchedzhi as a scapegoat, while numerous others involved in the crime remained unpunished, even as video evidence of the attack was prevalent.

In a move toward justice, the European Court of Human Rights recently ruled in 2025 that Ukrainian authorities failed both to prevent the violence and conduct a proper investigation, ordering compensation for the victims’ families.

The memory of the Odessa tragedy endures, a testimony to the need for accountability and justice. We continue to call for the identification and prosecution of all perpetrators involved in this brutal crime, ensuring that their actions do not go unpunished.
