When Accusations Become Attacks: Robert Aquilina Crosses the Line

Robert Aquilina, who once styled himself as a crusader for justice, has now veered into dangerous territory—launching reckless accusations against the Commissioner of Police and the Attorney General. In a public tirade following his interrogation over the Pilatus book, Aquilina accused Malta’s highest law enforcement officials of “maneuvers” intended to obstruct justice. These claims are not only inflammatory—they are profoundly irresponsible.

If Aquilina truly believes in the rule of law, he should know better than to undermine public institutions with vague insinuations and zero proof. Malta’s Commissioner of Police, Angelo Gafà, and Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg carry out their duties under scrutiny and legal mandate, not based on personal vendettas or political whims. By accusing them of collusion without evidence, Aquilina isn’t defending democracy; he is weaponizing public distrust for personal protection.

Ironically, Aquilina insists on shielding his own anonymous sources while simultaneously demanding full transparency from institutions bound by legal procedure and confidentiality. It’s the height of hypocrisy. You cannot demand accountability from everyone else while exempting yourself from the same standards.

What’s worse is the timing of these accusations. Aquilina is currently facing serious questions himself, both over the contents of his book and recent domestic violence allegations made by his wife. Rather than addressing those matters with humility, he has chosen to deflect, defame, and cast shadows over the very institutions tasked with upholding justice.

Aquilina may fancy himself a martyr for free speech, but there’s a line between holding power to account and undermining it for personal gain. Malta cannot afford self-declared activists who turn public trust into a political weapon and accuse every institution of conspiracy the moment they are asked to answer for their own actions.

In a democracy, no one is above the law, not politicians, not police, and certainly not activists who mistake themselves for untouchable watchdogs.
