Manoel Island, Malta – 8th June 2025
MIDI plc has announced its willingness to engage in discussions with the Government of Malta concerning the future of Manoel Island, signaling a potential shift in control of the historic island back to the state.
The announcement follows public statements from the Government emphasizing a new national policy direction—transforming Manoel Island into a national park. MIDI, which currently holds the land under a Deed of Emphyteusis, affirmed that it remains compliant with all legal obligations tied to its concession. However, in light of changing priorities, the company has declared its openness to finding a mutually beneficial resolution.
“MIDI is committed to continue to act in good faith to find a solution in order to implement Government’s stated objective for Manoel Island to revert to Government,” the statement read.
This development could mark a turning point in one of Malta’s most debated urban development projects. The move aligns with broader calls from civil society for more sustainable and publicly accessible use of the island, renowned for its historical and ecological significance.
MIDI emphasized that it would prioritize both public interest and the rights of its shareholders and bondholders throughout any negotiations. The company also committed to keeping the market updated with any significant developments.
This decision reflects an evolving dialogue between public heritage and private development on one of Malta’s most iconic locations.
