The Nationalist Party’s sudden concern for safety is nothing but political opportunism from those who once starved enforcement agencies and ignored infrastructure.
Today, the Nationalist Party held a press conference attempting to paint itself as the guardian of public safety. The irony couldn’t be more insulting.
Let’s be clear: this is the same PN that, during its decades in power, underfunded enforcement, neglected critical infrastructure, and left frontline officers without the tools, training, or support they desperately needed. Their so-called newfound concern for “safer roads and seas” reeks of cheap political theatre.
Where was this ‘concern’ when:
• Police stations across Malta and Gozo were being closed under PN rule?
• Maritime enforcement units were left with aging boats and outdated tech?
• Roads were crumbling under neglect, lacking proper signage, crossings, and safety barriers?
• Education campaigns on safety were practically non-existent?
What the Labour Government Has Actually Done:
Since 2013, the Labour Government has delivered real, measurable progress in public safety, including:

Partit Nazzjonalista presided over decades of infrastructural decay with no vision or plan for renewal
Road & Transport Safety
• Nationwide road upgrades, including new bypasses, traffic-calming infrastructure, pedestrian crossings, and safer junction designs.
• Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) rolled out to monitor and manage congestion and accidents.
• Installation of more speed cameras and red-light enforcement across danger zones.
• Free road safety education for schoolchildren, driver awareness campaigns, and safe cycling programmes.
• Investment in modern enforcement vehicles and equipment for the Transport Malta enforcement fleet.
• Enhanced driving license regulation including medical fitness and traffic violation tracking reforms.
Maritime & Sea Safety
• Modern patrol boats and advanced radar systems deployed for the AFM Maritime Squadron and Transport Malta officers.
• Upgraded port safety protocols and rescue operations capacity at key harbours and tourist hotspots.
• Mandatory training and certification for boat owners and jet ski operators.
• Lifeguard deployments on public beaches, with first-aid and rescue equipment upgraded yearly.
• Introduction of designated safe zones for swimmers and water sport areas.

Byron Camilleri
Police & Emergency Services
• New police stations built or renovated in Birkirkara, Ħamrun, Qormi, and Gozo.
• Rollout of Body-Worn Cameras for police officers to ensure transparency and safety.
• CCTV surveillance network expanded, including in remote villages and entertainment districts.
• Launch of the Community Policing Project, with beat officers dedicated to local areas for greater visibility and faster response.
• Major increase in police recruitment and specialised training in traffic control, drug interdiction, and cybercrime.
The PN Has No Moral Authority on Safety
It’s frankly laughable that the PN — with no plan, no record, and no credibility — is now preaching about proactive investment. When they had the chance, they chose austerity over safety and incompetence over action.
Their latest statements are nothing more than an attempt to stoke fear and project negativity. It is a classic move: manufacture panic, then promise salvation they’re in no position to offer.

Labour Governs
Labour Delivers – PN Attacks
The Labour Government doesn’t wait for tragedy to act. We plan, invest, and implement. Whether it’s safer roads, stronger enforcement, smarter traffic systems, or enhanced marine safety, this government has turned words into results.
Meanwhile, the PN continues its campaign of negativity, trying to score cheap political points on the back of people’s concerns.
