A Stronger Malta Through Compassion: Government Proposes Paid Miscarriage Leave for Couple

A first for Malta: Government unveils bold proposals to support couples through miscarriage with paid leave, financial aid, and psychological care.

Andy Ellul

On Friday, the Government once again proved that economic progress means nothing without social justice at its core.

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Hon. Andy Ellul, announced a groundbreaking set of proposals aimed at recognising and supporting couples who experience the pain of miscarriage — with empathy, dignity, and practical assistance.

What Has Been Proposed?

Seven Days of Paid Leave for Women Who Miscarry

Women who suffer a miscarriage will now be entitled to seven days of fully paid leave — not from their employer, but directly covered by the Government.

More Than Double the Minimum Wage

This is not just leave — it is meaningful compensation. The Government will pay more than twice the national minimum wage to ensure that women are not burdened financially during this deeply personal and painful time.

Leave for Partners Too

Importantly, the same seven-day leave will be extended to the partner of the woman, recognising that emotional trauma is shared, and so must be the healing.

Government-Funded Psychological Support

In addition to financial assistance, psychological support services will be made available and fully paid for by the state. This recognises the unseen wounds many couples carry after a miscarriage and provides a structured path to healing.

A Clear Message: Malta Puts People First

These proposals are not just administrative reforms — they are a statement of values.

They send a clear message that Malta is a country that cares. That no couple going through such heartbreak should be left alone. That economic growth must be matched with human empathy and a framework that protects people when they need it most.

Social Justice in Action

In announcing these proposals, Hon. Andy Ellul and the Labour Government are proving once again that economic success and social responsibility go hand in hand. As Malta’s economy continues to thrive, we will not leave anyone behind — not in times of joy, and certainly not in moments of sorrow.

This is the kind of leadership that builds a stronger, fairer Malta. 🇲🇹
