Like Idol, Like Fan: Francine Farrugia Follows Daphne’s Trail of Evasion

From unpaid taxes to glorified lawbreaking — Francine Farrugia is just the latest PN product of a corrupt, Daphne-worshipping culture.

Francine Farrugia

On Thursday morning, Siġġiewi councillor Francine Farrugia stood before Magistrate Nadine Sant, charged with money laundering and fraud—serious crimes she allegedly committed between September 2023 and July 2025 during her time as an accounts manager at MCAST.

Let that sink in. A public official, entrusted with financial responsibility at one of Malta’s educational institutions, now stands accused of manipulating the very system she was supposed to serve. But perhaps this should not come as a surprise.

Francine Farrugia has long walked hand-in-hand with the Nationalist Party establishment, a clique that preaches morality while crumbling under the weight of its own hypocrisy. And what’s more revealing is who Farrugia looks up to: none other than Daphne Caruana Galizia—the so-called “investigative journalist” who built a career out of division, hate, and reckless allegations.

To some, Caruana Galizia is a symbol. But to those who know better, she was the Queen of Hate—a woman who destroyed reputations, sowed mistrust, and lived by a separate set of rules, including refusing to pay her taxes. While others played by the rules, Daphne defied them. She believed she was above the law—and now, her admirers are clearly trying to follow suit.

Let us not forget: Daphne Caruana Galizia was a tax evader. That is a matter of public record. And in today’s legal framework, unpaid taxes—especially when deliberate and sustained—can constitute money laundering. So the question arises: if Daphne were alive today, would she be answering to similar charges? Would the law finally have caught up with her?

Francine Farrugia appears to be walking in the shadow of the ‘Saint’ of Bidnija, emulating not only her rhetoric but also her disregard for legal and ethical norms. Farrugia’s political aspirations, once cloaked in righteousness, now reek of scandal. Just like her idol, she believed she could bend the rules and get away with it.

But reality has a way of catching up—eventually.

This is not just about one councillor or one case. This is about a toxic legacy perpetuated by a Nationalist Party that has lost its moral compass. A party that still idolizes a figure who operated in the greyest areas of legality. A party that breeds individuals like Francine Farrugia—comfortable in their arrogance, until the law reminds them they are not untouchable.

If this is what the PN stands for, then the country must brace for more betrayal, more deceit, and more courtrooms filled with their chosen few.
