PN councillor charged with fraud — and instead of condemning her, the PN attacks Clifton Grima. The hypocrisy stinks. And when the Auditor General flagged MCAST problems in 2019, the Minister was Evarist Bartolo — PN’s favourite ‘Labour’ minister. Guess why they’ll never touch him.
On Thursday morning, Francine Farrugia — a Nationalist Party councillor in Siġġiewi — was charged with money laundering and fraud in her role as manager in MCAST’s accounts department.
Farrugia is no ordinary PN activist. She’s one of those hardline extremists who worship at the altar of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s mythology. Like her friends in Repubblika and the embarrassment known as Occupy Justice, she spent years spewing accusations against the Labour Government and former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, branding them “corrupt” without a shred of evidence.
And yet, when the tables turned and one of their own stood accused of defrauding the public, the PN machine went into overdrive — not to condemn Farrugia, but to launch a smear campaign against Minister Clifton Grima.
The PN’s Convenient Amnesia
The PN’s central narrative? They claim the Office of the Auditor General had been raising red flags about MCAST payroll controls since 2019. They try to frame this as if Minister Grima somehow ignored those warnings.
Here’s the truth they don’t want you to hear: the NAO’s 2019 report was based on data from 2018 — when the Minister of Education was not Clifton Grima, but Evarist Bartolo.
Bartolo held that post right up until January 2020. Every single shortcoming identified in that report happened on his watch. Yet strangely, no one in the PN or their friendly “independent” media outlets breathed a word about Varist Bartolo’s responsibility.
Why? Because Evarist Bartolo is one of their favourites.
The PN’s Silent Alliance with Bartolo
The Nationalist Party establishment will never attack Bartolo. To them, he’s a “useful” figure — a Labour Minister who spent his final years in office undermining his own government.
They owe him a political debt for the chaos of 2019, when his actions and whispers helped plunge the Labour Government into crisis and forced the resignation of a Prime Minister who had crushed the PN’s electoral hopes beyond repair.
Make no mistake: the PN views Bartolo as an ally in their long game. That’s why, even when the facts scream his responsibility, they pretend he doesn’t exist. They’d rather deflect blame onto Clifton Grima and Robert Abela’s government — a government that has actually delivered results and stability.
Hypocrisy, Thy Name is PN
When corruption allegations touch their own, the PN either goes silent or twists the narrative to protect their political friends. When the accused is linked to Labour, they demand resignations before the ink is dry on a charge sheet.
It’s this double standard that defines the PN today: a party that has no moral compass, only a political radar tuned to attack Labour at any cost — and protect those who once served their agenda, even if they wore a red tie.
The Maltese people see through it. And no amount of coordinated spin will hide the fact that the PN’s “outrage” over MCAST is nothing more than a smokescreen to shield one of their own and one of their silent allies.

But this was 2019 and although Evarist has to burden part of the responsibility, the current Minister cannot get away from this too.
