Abela Dominates PN Rivals in Marmarà Survey

A new political survey conducted by Vince Marmarà highlights Prime Minister Robert Abela’s continued advantage over both Adrian Delia and Alex Borg, two potential contenders for the Nationalist Party leadership.

The survey, based on a representative sample of 800 people and published at a 95% confidence level with a margin of error of ±3.46%, reveals significant gaps in support at the national level.

Abela vs Delia

When asked to compare Robert Abela with Adrian Delia, 45.7% of respondents expressed a preference for the prime minister, while only 23.8% chose Delia. A further 16.4% stated that they preferred “nobody,” 1.8% mentioned “other,” and 12.3% said they “don’t know.”

This translates into a 21.9‑point gap in Abela’s favour, underscoring how uphill a return to leadership would be for Delia.

Abela vs Borg

Against Alex Borg, Abela still emerges as the clear frontrunner, with 45.2% choosing him compared to 28.3% opting for Borg. Another 12.3% preferred “nobody,” 2.1% picked “other,” and 12.1% were undecided.

Here, the gap narrows slightly to 16.9 percentage points, suggesting Borg’s broader appeal compared to Delia—but still leaving Abela with a solid advantage.

Wider Implications for PN Leadership Race

Marmarà stressed the importance of considering not only national numbers, but also the candidates’ standing among PN supporters themselves. “These are results at the level of the national press,” he noted, adding that research into the party‑to‑party gap would be more meaningful after the PN chooses its new leader and stabilises internally.

Analysis

The survey confirms that while Robert Abela’s Labour Party continues to hold a commanding lead, the potential PN challenger matters. Delia appears to remain an unpopular figure with the general public, with support barely reaching one in four. Borg performs better, narrowing the gap by five points compared to Delia—but Abela still has nearly a 17‑point cushion.

For the PN, this snapshot reinforces one strategic truth: leadership choice will not only determine the party’s internal cohesion, but also its national competitiveness against Labour, which under Abela is still projecting dominance.
