Maltese Waterpolo Youth Team Shines Bright in Europe

Malta’s U18 national waterpolo team has written a proud new chapter in Maltese sport. The boys closed their European Youth Championship campaign in an impressive ninth place after defeating Germany 17-16 on penalties in a thrilling play-off on Saturday morning.

This achievement is nothing short of remarkable. Under the strong leadership of coach Jonathan Valletta, Malta not only finished first in their group, but also secured five victories out of six matches — proving that our small nation can stand tall among Europe’s finest.

The journey was memorable from start to finish. The Maltese started the championship with convincing wins against Poland and Germany, and even in their narrow defeat to powerhouse Serbia, they showed grit and determination that earned them respect on the European stage.

Saturday’s match against Germany was a rollercoaster of emotions. Malta opened with a dominant 3-0 lead in the first session, but the Germans struck back in the second (3-2) and kept pressing hard in the third (4-3) and fourth (5-4). The game ended in a tense 12-12 draw, forcing penalties. With nerves of steel, the Maltese triumphed 5-4 in the shootout, and it was Sam Engerer who calmly netted the decisive penalty to seal Malta’s historic ninth place finish.

This success would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of many. A heartfelt thanks goes to Karl Izzo, President of the Aquatic Sports Association, Mr. Rainer Scerri, and all those who have worked tirelessly to raise the level of this sport.

We also extend appreciation to Minister Clifton Grima, whose continued commitment to Maltese sport is vital in supporting our young athletes and providing them with the opportunities they deserve.

The Maltese waterpolo U18 boys’ team have given the nation a reason to be proud. They are proof that with passion, dedication, and the right support, Malta can continue to rise in international sport.
