When WhatsApp chats tell the truth, her congratulations ring hollow.
On Thursday, Roberta Metsola suddenly remembered that Ħamrun Spartans exist. With a polished tweet, she congratulated the club for qualifying to the next phase of the European Conference League. But let’s be honest: Metsola’s words are nothing more than empty PR, dripping with hypocrisy.

Ħamrun deserves respect, not PR games from a two-faced politician.
Roberta Metsola belongs to the Nationalist elite – the same clique that never set foot in Ħamrun, except perhaps to sneer at its people from a distance. Does anyone seriously believe Metsola has ever gone to watch a match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium? Ħamrun is a Labour stronghold, and to her and her PN establishment friends, that means it’s full of “ħamalli” – the term they love to use behind closed doors when describing Labourites.
And this is not speculation. Back in 2015, Metsola was constantly exchanging WhatsApp messages with her hero Daphne Caruana Galizia. In those private conversations, Labour journalists and politicians were dismissed as “ħamalli” – stupid, uneducated, not worth respecting. Metsola herself used the same degrading language. She never defended ordinary Labour people. She mocked them.
That’s why her sudden “congratulations” to Ħamrun Spartans is pure hypocrisy. Just look at the contrast:
- 2015 Metsola: Refers to Labour journalists and politicians as “ħamalli” in chats with Daphne.
- 2025 Metsola: Puts on her fake smile and congratulates Ħamrun Spartans for international PR points.
The hypocrisy could not be clearer. Metsola despises the same people whose success she now tries to exploit. To her, Ħamrun is not a proud community, but just a convenient photo opportunity when it suits her career.

Roberta Metsola may lead the European Parliament, but no amount of forced congratulations can hide the truth: she is out of touch, arrogant, and fake. Ħamrun deserves better than empty words from someone who has always mocked and despised what the people of Ħamrun truly stand for.
