A Vision for the Future: Prime Minister Robert Abela Strengthens Malta’s Maritime Industry

Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett, visited the Malta Freeport as works on the €56 million terminal expansion project continue at an advanced stage.

This ambitious investment will see the reclamation of 30,000 square metres of land from the sea, extending the North quay by 176 metres and the West quay by 195 metres. Thanks to this expansion, the Freeport will be able to accommodate some of the world’s largest containerships – vessels longer than four football pitches, capable of carrying 23,000 containers.

The Freeport is already one of the country’s most important economic pillars, connecting Malta to more than 110 ports around the world, including over 50 in the Mediterranean. Each year, it handles close to three million TEU containers, provides direct employment for more than 1,500 people, and contributes around €170 million to the Maltese economy. The current project will also create 165 new jobs, further strengthening the community.

A Prime Minister with a Clear Vision

Prime Minister Abela underlined that investment in maritime infrastructure is central to Malta’s future. He emphasised that this expansion not only consolidates Malta’s position as a leading transhipment hub in the Mediterranean but also improves the quality of life of the people of Birżebbuġa. With ships berthing further out, noise and disruption will be reduced, proving that progress can be achieved while respecting residents’ needs.

The Prime Minister made it clear that this project reflects the long-term ambitions set out in Malta Vision 2050. The Freeport expansion is a shining example of how sustainable land reclamation projects can support economic growth while safeguarding community well-being.

Dedication and Professionalism

Malta Freeport Terminals CEO Alex Montebello expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that around half of the works are already complete. He praised the dedication and professionalism of the workforce, who have overcome the significant challenges of land reclamation from the sea.

During the visit, the Prime Minister and Ministers Schembri and Bonett also experienced the state-of-the-art crane simulator. This cutting-edge technology provides world-class training to both new recruits and experienced workers, ensuring that the Freeport remains at the forefront of innovation and safety.

Investing in Today, Building for Tomorrow

The Freeport expansion is more than an infrastructural project – it is a symbol of Malta’s resilience and forward-thinking leadership under Robert Abela’s government. It represents investment in jobs, in people, in technology, and in Malta’s long-term competitiveness.

Once again, under a Labour Government, Malta is proving that it has the vision, the courage, and the determination to secure a stronger, brighter future for all.
