Borg’s First Decisions Expose Weakness and Continuity

The ink has barely dried on Alex Borg’s victory as the new Nationalist Party leader, yet his very first decisions already reveal the hollowness behind the so-called “renewal.”

In the coming hours, Borg will announce the assignment of Shadow Ministerial roles. But instead of a fresh start, Borg has chosen to cling to the same old faces that dragged the PN into irrelevance under Bernard Grech.

Beppe Fenech Adami on Internal Affairs – another relic of the past, symbolising the PN’s failure to connect with a new generation.

Rebecca Borg on Foreign Affairs – a name that will hardly inspire confidence in the midst of Europe’s turbulent political climate.

Ryan Callus on Energy – a portfolio he will shadow but never lead, given his record of empty rhetoric.

Toni Bezzina on Infrastructure – a figure whose credibility was shattered years ago, yet still recycled for lack of better options.

Joe Giglio, likely to take on Justice – a lawyer with eloquence, but also with the same establishment ties that choke the PN’s credibility.

This line-up exposes the truth: Alex Borg is not leading a new PN. He is merely continuing Bernard Grech’s failed script. No new vision, no new energy, no new blood — just a reshuffling of tired cards that the electorate has already rejected.

The PN has now reached its fifth leader in 12 years. Each one promised change, each one promised a break with the past — and each one delivered the opposite. Borg is no exception. Instead of a bold new beginning, his first act as leader reeks of weakness, compromise, and continuity.

With these choices, Borg will not strengthened his leadership. He will chaine himself to the same establishment that will drag him down — just as it dragged down Delia and Grech before him. The Nationalist Party’s march towards another massive defeat has not paused for a moment.

Borg’s honeymoon as leader is already over.
