The Nationalist Party’s Identity Crisis: Conservative Roots, Rainbow Facade

In the past dacade, the Nationalist Party has always had one problem bigger than its lack of leadership, its constant internal fighting, or its record of defeat after defeat: its lack of identity.

This week, they exposed themselves yet again.

After decades branding themselves as Malta’s “conservative voice,” the PN is now trying to paint itself as the champion of gay rights. The same PN that were against gay rights just a few years ago has now lit up its Central House with rainbow-coloured lights, pretending to be a party of “inclusion and diversity.”

Let’s not be fooled.

History does not lie: the PN is a conservative party, and you cannot be conservative and pro-gay at the same time. Conservatism, by definition, rejects this very ideology. So what happened now? Why the sudden rainbow facelift?

The answer is simple: votes.

Their newly-elected leader, Alex Borg, is rushing to be seen at Malta Pride. But the contradictions are glaring. Borg has publicly idolised Donald Trump – the conservative guru of our times – a man who stands firmly against LGBT rights. So how does Borg reconcile waving the rainbow flag on Republic Street with supporting Trump’s ultra-conservatism?

Did Alex Borg suddenly lose his “moral values”? Or is he just desperate to fish for votes in a country where the PN is bleeding support from every corner?

The truth is that the PN has no spine and no soul. It bends whichever way the wind blows. Today it dresses itself in rainbow colours. Yesterday crusaded against equality. Tomorrow, who knows what mask it will wear.

This is not inclusivity. This is not solidarity.

This is the politics of desperation.

And it is yet another reminder that the PN is not only irrelevant – it is also a party that cannot even define what it stands for anymore.
