The mask of “responsibility” quickly slips when it comes to those closest to the Nationalist Party leadership. Sarah Bajada, partner of the newly-elected PN leader Alex Borg, was caught driving without a valid licence and insurance — a serious offence that endangers not just herself, but everyone on the road.
And what was her excuse? That she was “too busy” campaigning for her partner’s leadership. That somehow, because she was immersed in politics, she should be excused from one of the most basic obligations of every citizen.
Let’s be clear: reminders are always sent before renewals. Bajada’s licence and insurance expired in July — yet here we are in September, only for her to act apologetic after being caught at a Transport Malta roadblock. This was not a one-day oversight. This was months of neglect.
Her justification is nothing short of an insult to common sense. Every family in Malta, regardless of political colour, knows the consequences of driving without insurance. If it were Michelle Muscat or Lydia Abela who committed the same offence, the Nationalist Party and its satellites would have been foaming at the mouth, demanding resignations, calling press conferences, and screaming about “irresponsibility.” But because it’s the partner of their leader, silence reigns.
This is the hypocrisy the PN swims in. One rule for themselves, another rule for everyone else. They excuse their own while condemning others. They minimise their faults but magnify those of their opponents.
Sarah Bajada says she “takes responsibility.” But responsibility isn’t a Facebook post. Responsibility means respecting the law before you’re caught breaking it. Until then, her apology rings hollow — and reveals once again the double standards that define the PN and those around it.
