A political earthquake is about to hit the Nationalist Party. Reliable sources confirm that PN Leader Alex Borg is preparing to nominate Hon. Joe Giglio as the new Shadow Minister for Justice – a move that delivers a direct and humiliating blow to the Defnisti faction within the party.
Defnisti in Shock and Panic
The Defnisti camp is stunned. Their influence inside the PN has already been on the decline, and this decision all but guarantees a further collapse of their strength. Dumping Karol Aquilina – one of their most loyal soldiers – and choosing Giglio, one of their fiercest enemies, has left them fuming.
Aquilina Shifted, Giglio Rises
Karol Aquilina is widely expected to be shifted to the role of Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where he will focus his energy on trying to “beat up” the Government. But inside the PN, everyone knows this is a downgrade compared to the central and prestigious Justice portfolio.
Old Wounds Reopened
The Defnisti have not forgotten Joe Giglio’s past legal roles. He was the lawyer for Pilatus Bank, he represented individuals in libel cases against the Caruana Galizia’s family, and he also acted as lawyer for some of those implicated in the Vitals scandal.
Now they are already sharpening their knives, accusing Giglio of being tainted by the Aliyev case and warning that as Shadow Minister for Justice, he will face daily conflicts of interest.
A Brewing Civil War
Behind the scenes, Defnisti strategists are preparing a major attack against Giglio the moment Alex Borg announces his shadow cabinet reshuffle. They know this appointment threatens to wipe out their influence once and for all.
Decline of the Defnisti
The writing has been on the wall for months. Years ago, Daphne Caruana Galizia herself repeatedly incited the people of Sliema not to vote for Giglio. And after their bruising campaign on the Great Siege Monument, the Defnisti have lost momentum and credibility.
Now, with Borg’s decision, their collapse inside the PN is accelerating. Giglio’s rise as Shadow Minister for Justice is not just a reshuffle – it is the final nail in the coffin for a faction already weakened and isolated.
One thing is clear: the Defnisti’s golden days inside the PN are over.

The PN should look forward and first they need to embrace change positively
