Ministers Grima and Refalo Bring Animal Hospital Back to Life

Education meets compassion as MCAST and the Ministry for Agriculture join forces for a national cause.

The Labour Government continues to prove that it leads through action, not words. In a clear demonstration of commitment and coordination, Education Minister Clifton Grima has announced that the long-awaited Ta’ Qali Animal Hospital will reopen in the coming weeks, thanks to the joint efforts of his ministry and that of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Minister Anton Refalo.

When answering a parliamentary question from Opposition MP Janice Chetcuti, Minister Grima explained that MCAST, with the assistance of Minister Refalo’s ministry, is finalising a Negotiated Procedure that will allow the hospital to reopen and start offering the essential veterinary services the country needs.

This project stands as a shining example of inter-ministerial cooperation — a hallmark of the Labour Government’s way of working. The vision behind the reopening goes far beyond bricks and mortar: it brings together education, animal welfare, and practical training in one modern, functional space.

Minister Grima rightly pointed out that MCAST’s involvement in the Ta’ Qali hospital makes perfect sense. As the veterinary course reopens this year with 25 students already enrolled, these young trainees will now benefit from real-life experience within a professional hospital environment. This is education with purpose — giving students not just a qualification, but also the skills and compassion to build a career that truly serves society.

Minister Anton Refalo also deserves full recognition for his constant support and determination to ensure that the Ta’ Qali facility once again becomes a centre of excellence for animal care and veterinary education. His ministry’s technical guidance and collaboration have been instrumental in reviving this important project.

This is what Labour governance is all about: teamwork, planning, and delivery. While others criticise from the sidelines, this Government — led by Prime Minister Robert Abela — continues to act, to invest, and to deliver tangible results for people, students, and professionals alike.

The reopening of the Ta’ Qali Animal Hospital is more than a promise fulfilled; it is a symbol of partnership between education and animal welfare, and a clear testament to Labour’s belief in building a stronger, fairer, and more compassionate Malta.

Thank you, Ministers Clifton Grima and Anton Refalo — for proving once again that Labour delivers.
