Labour Leading the Way Once Again: Andy Ellul Champions the Right to Disconnect

Andy Ellul’s “Right to Disconnect” initiative marks another milestone in Labour’s vision for a fair, modern, and family-friendly Malta — where progress is measured not only by economic growth, but by quality of life.

In a world where the line between work and personal life has become increasingly blurred, the Labour Government has once again taken the lead — this time through Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Dr Andy Ellul, who has officially launched the national discussion on the Right to Disconnect.

This is not just another policy proposal. It is a bold and forward-looking step that puts people, families, and well-being at the heart of our national agenda.

A Government That Listens, A Policy That Cares

Dr Ellul’s announcement marks the beginning of a wide public consultation that will invite workers, employers, unions, and families to shape Malta’s own model for the Right to Disconnect.

It is a perfect example of how social dialogue and good governance come together under Labour — where no policy is imposed from above, but built through discussion, respect, and shared responsibility

.

This is the same Labour Government that has already implemented countless family-friendly measures: from free childcare, to stronger parental leave rights, to record increases in pensions and in-work benefits.

Now, through the Right to Disconnect, it continues to modernise the world of work to reflect the realities of a new digital age — where employees are expected to be constantly “online,” yet deserve the basic dignity of personal time.

Work-Life Balance as a Social Right

The Right to Disconnect is not about working less — it’s about working smarter and living better.

It recognises that true productivity comes from balance, not burnout.

It ensures that after working hours, every Maltese and Gozitan worker can truly rest, recharge, and dedicate time to what matters most: family, health, and personal growth.

Dr Ellul rightly pointed out that this is the first stage in a structured process — one that will go through the MCESD and engage all social partners in shaping the model that best fits Malta’s reality.

This measured, inclusive approach stands in stark contrast to the chaotic and populist rhetoric of the Opposition, which talks about workers’ rights but never delivers when in power.

Malta Once Again Ahead of the Curve

Europe is moving towards a common framework on the Right to Disconnect — but, as Dr Ellul emphasised, Malta is not waiting to be told what to do.

Under Prime Minister Robert Abela, our country is once again proving that it can lead by example, setting standards instead of following them.

From economic resilience to environmental reforms and social justice, Malta continues to show that Labour is the movement of progress and compassion.

A Government for Today’s Workers and Tomorrow’s Families

The introduction of this discussion shows that the Labour Government understands the evolving nature of work — hybrid models, 24/7 communication, and the mental health pressures that come with it.

While others still debate outdated politics, Labour is addressing real issues that touch people’s daily lives.

As Dr Ellul concluded:

“The challenge before us is not whether we should recognise the Right to Disconnect — but how we do it, to ensure a balance that makes sense for our country.”

That statement captures the essence of Labour’s approach: practical, human, and future-oriented.

Once again, Labour leads. Others follow.

With this initiative, Dr Andy Ellul has positioned Malta as a leader in progressive labour policy, proving that a modern, caring Government doesn’t just create jobs — it creates quality of life.

Under Labour, Malta continues to move forward — with courage, balance, and common sense.
