One TV’s Dominance: Outpacing Europe’s Top Private Channels

International Comparison: Insights from European TV Markets

To contextualize One TV’s achievements within a broader European framework, comparisons with other major markets reveal the exceptional nature of its dominance. In larger, more fragmented television landscapes, individual private channels typically command far lower audience shares due to greater competition and diverse offerings.

In Italy, Europe’s fourth-largest TV market, major broadcaster groups like public Rai and private Mediaset each hold around 35-40% of prime-time audience shares across their portfolios.   For instance, in the first quarter of 2025, Rai achieved a 40.6% prime-time share, while Mediaset followed at 34.6%.  However, individual channels secure lower shares: Rai 1 averaged 26.8% in prime time, and Mediaset’s Canale 5 reached 18.5% during the summer.   One TV’s 49% share among private channels surpasses these individual figures, highlighting its outsized influence in Malta’s compact market.

In France, private broadcaster TF1 leads with an audience share of around 20-23% in 2025, significantly ahead of competitors like M6 at 13.1%.    This is dwarfed by One TV’s commanding position, underscoring the differences between Malta’s concentrated private sector and France’s more diversified environment.

Germany’s market shows similar fragmentation, with private channel RTL achieving an 11.2% share among key demographics in 2024 (latest available), outpacing public broadcasters but far below One TV’s 49%.

In Spain, top private channels like Antena 3 hold 12.8%, followed by Telecinco at 9.4%, while broadcaster groups reach 26% and 24.3% respectively.  Again, these figures pale in comparison to One TV’s single-channel dominance.

In the UK, private broadcasters like ITV and Sky compete in a highly competitive space, with ITV’s group share typically around 17-20%, though individual channels are lower.  Amid global trends like streaming erosion, viewing down 1.5-1.9% in Italy and similar declines elsewhere, One TV’s resilience and high share demonstrate remarkable success in engaging local audiences.

These comparisons illustrate how One TV’s 49% share represents a level of market control rarely seen in Europe’s larger, more saturated markets, where no single private channel approaches such dominance.
