Letter to U.S. Ambassador H.E. Somer Farkas

E. Somers Farkas,

U.S. Ambassador to Malta

30th January 2026

Subject: Observations on Political Consistency and Malta’s Relations with the United States

Dear Ambassador Farkas,

I extend my sincerest regards for your distinguished service in strengthening the enduring partnership between Malta and the United States.

As you are well aware, Malta has been graciously extended an informal invitation to join US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. Labour Government is engaging in a deliberate and reflective assessment of this initiative, driven by a steadfast commitment to endorsing efforts that foster lasting global peace and stability, even in the face of varying viewpoints within the European Union.

By way of contrast, I have noted that Leader of the Opposition Hon. Alex Borg indicated on Wednesday a preference to forgo such an invitation, referencing certain apprehensions about President Trump’s stances on topics involving the EU, NATO, and Greenland. In a similar vein, during TVM’s Xtra programme, Hon. Beppe Fenech Adami, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, offered perspectives that were notably critical of President Trump over the course of the discussion.

Additionally, from the outset of President Trump’s tenure, the Nationalist Party has maintained an active dialogue on his approaches, with particular emphasis on policies related to immigration and wider societal themes commonly referred to as “woke.” This ongoing engagement highlights a certain variability in the Party’s foreign policy orientation, where alignment with the European Union often takes precedence, potentially leading to perceptions of inconsistency or differing standards in international matters.

It is thus of particular interest that, on Thursday evening, both Hon. Borg and Hon. Fenech Adami participated in the welcome reception held in your honor, as part of the preparations for the United States’ 250th anniversary. On July 4, 2026, the United States will observe the signing of the Declaration of Independence, an event of immense historical resonance that embodies timeless ideals of liberty and unity. At this gathering, both individuals were captured in photographs with Your Excellency.

These nuances understandably encourage contemplation on the intricacies of political alignment and coherence in the realm of diplomacy. In this context, I would humbly suggest that Your Excellency might find it prudent to approach future interactions with a heightened awareness of any evolving dynamics the Nationalist Party may exhibit toward the United States in the months ahead.

I am certain that such thoughtful consideration, pursued through amicable and forthright exchanges, will only fortify the solid foundation of trust and collaboration between our countries.

Malta holds its relationship with the United States in the highest esteem, and I am optimistic that sustained engagement will continue to yield mutual benefits for our citizens.

Sincerely,

Neville Gafa’
