It appears that The Malta Independent has a tendency to follow Saviour Balzan and report his statements without first verifying the facts. A notable example is the recent issue involving “il-ġbejna tan-nagħaġ,” a traditional cheeselet made from sheep’s milk that has been granted the European Union’s Protected Designation of Origin, following approval from the European Commission.
Balzan published an article inspired by comments on Facebook. However, he might not realize that Carmelo Saliba does not have any sheep registered at the Slaughterhouse. This detail is crucial because, without registered sheep, Saliba would be unable to legally sell or distribute ġbejniet, rendering any such transactions unlawful. This was confirmed also by Saliba’s relatives.
Last week was definitely not a walk in the park for Roberta Metsola. First, she missed out on the inauguration of President Donald Trump, which was quite a blow to her ego. But fear not, she quickly turned to Facebook to pat herself on the back for being invited to Davos. Talk about bouncing back!
Then came the hilarious Ġbejna incident. I mean, who could forget that photo? Poor Metsola, but luckily Salvu Balzan came to the rescue. It’s always good to have a salva uomo handy, right?
But The Malta Independent have engaged by reiterating the same Facebook remarks. It seems their intention is to mock Alex Agius Saliba while simultaneously drawing attention away from a notable error made by Roberta Metsola.
It is imperative that journalists uphold the highest standards of accuracy and integrity in their reporting. I urge The Malta Independent to reevaluate their practices and ensure that all information is thoroughly verified before publication.
