Kiev rejects Putin’s offer of mercy for troops in Kursk

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga stated that Ukraine will continue operations in Russia’s Kursk Region, despite encirclement claims by Moscow and Washington.

Speaking to Japan’s NHK, Sibiga said Ukraine met its main objectives but insists on maintaining a presence for leverage in peace talks. Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk last August saw initial gains, but Russian forces have since reclaimed 86% of the land.

Russian President Putin expressed openness to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Washington and Kiev if issues like the continued troop presence are settled.

U.S. President Trump acknowledged Ukrainian forces are “surrounded” and urged Putin to ensure their safety. Ukrainian President Zelensky, however, denied the encirclement, although he admitted the situation is challenging.
