Double Standards? The Untold Story of the Caruana Galizia Family’s Data Controversy

Occupy Justice have boldly thrust themselves into the spotlight once again, this time over the mysterious deletion of data by former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

Yet, in a mind-boggling twist of hypocrisy, they conveniently overlook a significant detail: the Caruana Galizia family themselves had their own episode of data destruction when they requested Daphne Caruana Galizia’s laptop data be erased by the German authorities.

How convenient for Occupy Justice to demand transparency and accountability from Joseph Muscat when the family of their hero acted similarly, asking German police investigators to delete critical data at their behest! This scandalous omission is made even more egregious by the audacious manner in which they condemn Muscat for erasing his iPhone data and WhatsApp backups.

The narrative takes another scandalous turn with revelations from a German chief public prosecutor. On July 8, 2019, a letter was sent to the Maltese Attorney General confirming that the Caruana Galizia family, the legal owners of the data, had requested that the German authorities delete it after conducting their analysis. The Germans, abiding by the family’s request, duly complied, all while Occupy Justice continues to point fingers and level accusations.

The laptop, initially handed over to the German federal police to safeguard Caruana Galizia’s sources, became a bone of contention as the family sought data privacy whilst simultaneously demanding others to uphold the very transparency they sidestepped.

Where was the outrage then, one might ask?

This stark double standard paints both Occupy Justice and the Caruana Galizia family in a scandalous light, revealing their selective memory and audacious willingness to shape a narrative that fits their agenda, while conveniently ignoring their own actions which mirror those they criticize.
