Only a few days ago, Robert Aquilina stood in a Maltese courtroom, accused of domestic violence and the illegal arrest of his own wife — charges so serious that a police risk assessment concluded her life and safety were in real danger.
Last week, in a twist that was rumoured for days, Aquilina’s wife requested to drop the domestic violence charges, a request that the court accepted without further investigation. Many close to the case believe — and rightly question — whether this was a free decision or the result of enormous pressure placed on a victim who was previously deemed at risk of grave harm.
Yet instead of stepping back in shame to face his reality, Aquilina has done the opposite: he announced he is not only resuming his role as Malta’s representative for Fondazione Falcone — but that he has apparently been promoted to its General Council.
One must ask: what message is Fondazione Falcone sending to the public? This is a foundation built on the legacy of Giovanni Falcone, a martyr of justice, assassinated by the Mafia for upholding a culture of legality and accountability. Now, the same foundation pins its credibility to a man recently dragged before court for domestic abuse and the illegal arrest of his own spouse — and praises him for working “for justice in Malta and beyond”.
Has Fondazione Falcone quietly rewritten its mission statement? From championing rule of law to turning a blind eye to alleged domestic violence within its own ranks? This decision is an insult to every victim of abuse, and it shatters public trust in what this foundation once stood for.

Giovanni Falcone
Aquilina’s hypocrisy is not news. For over a decade he smeared families, slandered people as criminals and mafia stooges, and positioned himself as Malta’s moral compass. Behind closed doors, however, he was terrorising the very family he pretended to protect.
The court may have dropped the charges, but the truth remains for everyone to see. And instead of facing the consequences like any other accused, Aquilina hides behind a once-respected foundation to launder his name.

Fondazione Falcone
If Fondazione Falcone believes the Maltese people will accept this farce, they are gravely mistaken. Justice and trust cannot coexist with hypocrisy of this magnitude. This reckless endorsement has stained the foundation’s name and betrayed its founder’s sacrifice.
The court may have closed its file. But the public has already delivered its verdict: Robert Aquilina’s mask has fallen, and Fondazione Falcone is now complicit in covering up the disgrace behind it.
