A Vigil for Hypocrisy: How Repubblika Backed a Wife-Beater on the Great Siege Monument

Repubblika’s lowest point yet: from cries for justice to excuses for domestic violence.

This evening’s so-called “vigil” at the Great Siege Monument, organised by Repubblika and their Defnisti clique, was nothing short of a spectacular flop — a laughable gathering of barely a dozen people desperately clinging to an agenda that has long lost any moral or civic authority.

While they claim to stand for “Justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia,” tonight’s pitiful display exposed the true priority of these self-appointed moral guardians: scrupulous support for Robert Aquilina, the same man arraigned in court, accused of domestic violence and the illegal arrest of his wife.

A Stage for Hypocrisy

Standing on the same monument they have turned into a partisan shrine, the Defnisti used the lowest-attended vigil in their history not to honour justice, but to twist reality and cast Aquilina. a man who faced serious criminal charges, as some victim and hero.

It is truly unbelievable how these extremist spin doctors have tried to launder Aquilina’s image: from an accused violent aggressor to a martyr for “truth and justice.” One only needs to scratch the surface to see this charade for what it is – a cynical PR stunt to protect their own power network.

Fake Drama to Hide Internal Rot

This site revealed on Sunday that there was serious internal pressure within Repubblika to sever ties with Aquilina after his arrest and arraignment. Many insiders recognised that his continued presence would destroy what little credibility Repubblika still clings to.

But rather than take genuine responsibility, Repubblika and Aquilina concocted a fake scenario: an empty “offer” for him to step aside, which he could then melodramatically reject, pretending to be principled while sparing himself deeper humiliation.

This is not activism. It’s political theatre and a cheap one at that.

Justice Served, But Never Enough for Extremists

During tonight’s comedic gathering, these Defnisti repeated their tired pledge to fight for Daphne Caruana Galizia, ignoring that justice has already caught up with her killers. Last week, Robert Agius and Jamie Vella were found guilty of supplying the bomb that ended her life. But for Repubblika’s hardcore faction, no conviction is ever enough, because constant outrage is their lifeblood.

A Circus No One Cares About

Despite aggressively promoting this vigil for weeks, the reality on the ground was humiliating: barely a dozen loyalists, and during their live podcast, a pathetic audience of FOUR people tuned in while Prof. Vicki Ann Cremona, Repubblika’s president, tried to sound relevant.

This is what remains of Repubblika: a tiny echo chamber, convinced it speaks for the “civil society” but ignored by the very people it claims to represent. They are irrelevant, out of touch, and clinging to a narrative that Malta has long outgrown.

Tonight’s fiasco was not a vigil for justice — it was a wake for what’s left of Repubblika’s moral high ground. A dozen fanatics, spinning lies to protect a domestic violence accused, while pretending to stand for truth.

Malta deserves better than this farce. And the sooner these extremists realise their own irrelevance, the sooner real civil society can reclaim its voice.
