Brussels tightens the noose, and Labour claps politely from the sidelines
At a time when Malta’s maritime future is under direct assault from yet another suicidal EU sanctions policy, the Labour Party remains disturbingly silent. Not a statement. Not a press conference. Not even a whisper.
This week, the European Commission unveiled a new proposal to lower the price cap on Russian oil — a move that will directly trigger reflagging. That means ships registered in EU member states, including Malta, will abandon the EU flag altogether and move their registration to non-EU jurisdictions. And who could blame them?
Malta’s Shipping Power — About to Be Scuttled
Let’s remind Labour of the facts they’ve apparently chosen to ignore:
- Over 9,500 vessels fly the Maltese flag
- Malta’s ship registry is the largest in Europe, and sixth largest globally by gross tonnage
- The industry supports thousands of jobs, brings in hundreds of millions in revenue, and contributes significantly to our reputation as a maritime nation
And yet, despite these staggering numbers — despite the clear and present danger to this entire sector — Labour has nothing to say.
No defence of national interest. No rebuttal of Brussels.
Just silence. Obedient, gutless silence.
Sanctions That Hurt Malta More Than Moscow
The EU’s decision to tighten the oil price cap on Russia won’t hurt the Kremlin — it’ll hurt Valletta’s maritime community, local service providers, and the entire maritime legal ecosystem. Shipowners are not emotional — they’re rational. They will abandon the EU register if the regulatory and reputational risks outweigh the benefits.
This is not a theory. It’s already happening.
The EU is lighting the fuse, and Malta’s flag is the one closest to the fire.

Partit Laburista
Selective Outrage from Labour’s Communications Clowns
What makes this more infuriating is the blatant hypocrisy of Labour’s communications team. They had all the time in the world to issue a press release mocking the Nationalist Party, after Adrian Delia and Alex Borg were barred from debating each other in what has become a censorship circus.
By staying silent, the Labour Party’s communications team is sending a message louder than any press release:
They too have been barred from speaking.
Just like the PN leadership candidates were gagged from debating each other, Labour’s mouthpieces have now been muzzled on a crisis that threatens one of Malta’s most vital economic sectors.
This isn’t a coincidence.
This is calculated silence.
A silence that betrays weakness, obedience, and a complete abandonment of Malta’s national interest.
When your own flag is under attack and you say nothing, you are complicit in its downfall.
