Silenced in Alaska: Metsola’s Voice Fades as Putin Sets the Agenda

The Alaska Summit exposed Roberta Metsola’s hypocrisy and left the EU sidelined while Putin emerged stronger than ever.

The Alaska Summit has done more than reveal Vladimir Putin’s commanding presence on the global stage—it has exposed the weakness, irrelevance, and duplicity of Europe’s so‑called leaders.

For years, the European Union has crafted a fiction: that Putin was isolated, Russia was collapsing, and Ukraine was on the path to victory only because Brussels “kept the pressure.” This narrative has now been shattered. Neither EU leaders nor Ukraine were even offered a seat in Alaska, while Trump shook hands with Putin under the world’s spotlight.

Yet, astonishingly, Roberta Metsola—the European Parliament’s President, dubbed by many as the self‑styled “Empress of Battles”—responded with hollow praise for Trump’s diplomacy. The spectacle is grotesque: a politician who spent years fanning the flames of a conflict suddenly applauding peace efforts that render her entire strategy bankrupt.

It is nothing but hypocrisy. One day Metsola and her Brussels colleagues posture as hardliners waging a moral crusade against Moscow; the next, sidelined and diminished, they content themselves with online meetings, relegated to the margins of real diplomacy. The contrast could not be sharper: Washington and Moscow sit face‑to‑face, while Metsola & Co. watch enviously from the sidelines.

This is the political reality the EU cannot face. For all their bluster about “unity” and “standing firm,” they were left outside looking in. Worst of all, they now must reckon with the fact that the central player they mocked as “isolated” is the only one who holds real leverage: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.

The Alaska Summit has hammered the final nail into Brussels’s credibility. Metsola and her colleagues can issue their furious statements, but it is a hollow theater. The red carpet of global influence was not rolled out for them—it was rolled out for Russia’s leader.

In the end, Europe’s leaders have revealed themselves as powerless architects of a failed policy, humiliated by events they can no longer control. History may remember them not as defenders of Europe, but as politicians who confused stubbornness with strategy—and, in the process, exposed their own irrelevance.
