Gozo welcomed a new era for sport and community with the official opening of the Gozo Aquatic Complex on Wednesday evening, a milestone celebrated by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Abela highlighted the transformative impact of the new complex. He noted that Gozo can now host international sporting events, bringing global attention to the island and creating opportunities for local athletes to shine on a larger stage. “This project adds significant value to Gozo and reinforces the government’s commitment to investing in the island’s future,” he said. He also emphasized that the Sports and Aquatic Pavilion is part of a broader program of investments aimed at transforming Gozo into a vibrant, sustainable hub for sports and tourism.
Abela outlined plans under the Urban Sustainable Development Fund, detailing an anticipated €60 million investment that will fund a generation of eco-friendly, people-centric improvements across Gozo. “We envision new green urban spaces that enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike,” he commented, noting plans such as an underground car park in the centre of Victoria and the extension of Villa Rundle Gardens in Republic Street, Victoria.
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri described the inauguration as a historic moment for the island. “We are placing Gozo on the European map as a premier sports destination,” he said. “The complex features state-of-the-art facilities built to international standards. For years, this was a promise; today it is a reality thanks to a government that keeps its commitments.”
