On the occasion of Malta’s National Day celebrations in Paris, His Excellency, Monsignor Joe Vella Gauci, Malta’s Ambassador to UNESCO, delivered a message of pride, vision, and determination that reflects the very best of our nation’s cultural diplomacy.
In commemorating the 60th anniversary of Malta’s membership in UNESCO, Ambassador Vella Gauci underscored Malta’s enduring commitment to safeguarding its unique cultural and historical legacy. He announced that Malta has officially submitted the Executive Summary and Draft Nomination Dossier to the World Heritage Centre—an important step in the recognition of the Harbour Fortifications, Mdina, and the Citadel as candidates for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This initiative not only pays tribute to Malta’s rich history but also strengthens our international standing as a country that values and protects its heritage for future generations. The fortifications and historic cities represent centuries of resilience, artistry, and identity that form the backbone of our nation’s story.
Ambassador Vella Gauci also revealed Malta’s candidacy for the World Heritage Committee for the period 2027–2031, a significant milestone that would see Malta actively contributing to the global conversation on heritage protection and international cooperation. This step confirms Malta’s leadership and credibility in advocating for cultural heritage on the world stage.
His Excellency’s words capture the essence of what it means to be Maltese: a small nation with a grand history, deeply committed to preserving its treasures while sharing them with the world. Through his dedicated work, Ambassador Monsignor Vella Gauci continues to raise Malta’s profile internationally, ensuring that our islands remain a beacon of heritage, identity, and cooperation within the UNESCO family.
Malta can be proud of its Ambassador—proud of a voice that speaks with clarity, vision, and unwavering commitment to protecting the cultural soul of our nation.
