The Labour Government has once again shown that its heart is with the people. Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Hon. Andy Ellul, has announced a groundbreaking measure that will give both parents the right to special leave when their newborn baby is admitted to the Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU).
This is more than just a new policy – it is a statement of values. It shows that Malta under a Labour Government continues to be a country that places families, compassion, and social justice at the very centre of decision-making.
A Milestone in Family Rights
Speaking at the opening of the national conference on NPICU Support Leave, Dr. Ellul explained that this leave will not only be granted to mothers, but also to their partners – including same-sex couples. This is a progressive and inclusive step forward, ensuring that no parent is left out during one of the most difficult moments in a family’s life.
No Burden on Employers
Importantly, Dr. Ellul reassured employers that this measure will not place any additional financial or administrative burden on them. The Government is committed to ensuring balance – protecting families during critical times while keeping businesses strong and competitive.
Compassion Meets Practical Support
Medical research shows that when both parents are able to spend time with their baby in intensive care, recovery is faster and the emotional well-being of the family is strengthened. Beyond the medical benefits, this new leave will also reduce the financial strain that many families face unexpectedly when their newborn requires intensive care.
A Collective National Effort
This conference marked the beginning of a national discussion, where parents who lived through such experiences shared their testimonies, confirming the urgent need for such support. In the coming weeks, more activities will be organised to ensure that all stakeholders contribute to shaping this law – a law designed to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Labour Government: Always on the Side of Families
Hon. Andy Ellul summed it up best – for Malta to move forward, everyone must pull together. With this new initiative, the Labour Government continues to deliver on its promise: building a fairer, more compassionate society where no family is left behind.
