Alex Borg: The Weakest Nationalist Leader in History

From condemning Repubblika to clapping beside them — the collapse of Alex Borg.

Defnisti Repubblika and Occupy Justice — those two twin branches of Malta’s so-called “civil society” — were once again protesting against the government’s planning reform. Nothing new. The same faces, the same slogans, the same arrogance. These are the people who turned the Great Siege Monument into a garbage heap, plastering it with photos, candles, and filth.

But this time, their gathering had an unexpected guest — Alex Borg, the Leader of the Opposition.

The same Alex Borg who, not long ago, condemned these groups for their lack of respect. The same Alex Borg who once called them out for their hypocrisy and their obsession with turning public monuments into political altars.

And yet there he was — smiling, shaking hands, pretending to be one of them.

What changed?

Nothing, except his need for survival.

When you win a leadership contest by 44 votes, you become a hostage to everyone. At the start of the campaign, Alex Borg had a comfortable lead — a full ten percent ahead of Adrian Delia. But when Simon Mizzi took over his campaign, the race that was supposed to be a sure victory turned into a near disaster.

From that moment, Alex Borg was no longer leading — he was being led.

He used to call Repubblika and Occupy Justice extremists. Now he bows to them.

He used to speak about change. Now he repeats their slogans.

He used to condemn their desecration of the Great Siege Monument. Now he walks among them as if nothing happened.

In one short month, Alex Borg has proven to be the weakest Nationalist leader ever.

Delia was a failure — everyone knew that. But Borg is worse: a man who rose with talk of strength and conviction, only to collapse at the first sign of pressure.

If Alex Borg doesn’t have the courage to stand up to a handful of activists smaller than a village band club, how will he ever face the leadership of Robert Abela and the Labour Party?

Once again, the Nationalist Party has crowned a man who stands for nothing and bends to everything.

And for that, we sincerely thank the PN delegates.

Because while Adrian Delia came close to humiliating him — Robert Abela will finish the job.
