Editorial : Blue Lights Can’t Fix Political Immaturity

At the start of a parliamentary sitting earlier this week,  one thing stood out more than anything else — the empty chair of the Leader of the Opposition.

Alex Borg arrived late. For someone who has spent the last month preaching about leadership, discipline, and accountability, it was a perfect demonstration of how not to lead.

The reason for his delay? Traffic. According to Borg, he couldn’t make it on time because, unlike the Prime Minister, he doesn’t have an escort.

Yes, you read that right. The newly appointed Leader of the Opposition believes he needs flashing blue lights and outriders to be punctual.

It’s almost poetic — a man so eager to imitate the Prime Minister that he’s now complaining he doesn’t have his motorcade. Blessed is the wisdom of God, indeed.

Even Net News, the Nationalist Party’s own media arm, chose not to quote Borg’s excuse in their coverage of the session. Perhaps they realised that some words are better left unprinted.

But let’s put this into perspective. Every Member of Parliament faces traffic. Every one of them had to make it through the same morning chaos to attend the session. Yet somehow, they all managed to arrive on time — without police escorts, without sirens, and without excuses.

Leadership is about preparation, foresight, and responsibility. Not about blue lights, tinted windows, and complaining about the morning commute.

Alex Borg would do well to remember that political maturity doesn’t come with a driver or an escort. It comes with humility, consistency, and the ability to accept responsibility — qualities that seem to have taken the same route as his punctuality: stuck somewhere in traffic.

So here’s some advice, Alex — cure that obsession with becoming Prime Minister overnight. Leadership isn’t a title; it’s a test. And if you can’t even arrive on time for Parliament, maybe it’s too early to be asking for a motorcade.

Yes, you were late. And no, not even the most imaginative excuse will change that.
