A man branded mentally unfit at home, now trying to lecture Malta on democracy.
For years, Pieter Omtzigt, a Dutch MP with an inflated ego and a dangerous obsession with Malta, has behaved as if our country were his personal experiment. What began as a so-called “rapporteur” mission at the Council of Europe has turned into a long campaign of interference and manipulation — aimed directly at Malta’s Labour Government and the sovereign will of the Maltese people.
Let us never forget: Omtzigt was a long-time member of the European People’s Party (EPP) — the same European political family as Malta’s Partit Nazzjonalista.
The EPP has never forgiven the Maltese electorate for repeatedly rejecting the PN. Omtzigt became their loudest foreign instrument, using European institutions to attack Malta’s international reputation and discredit the Labour movement that the Maltese people democratically chose.
From Rapporteur to Political Weapon
In 2019, as Council of Europe rapporteur, Omtzigt published a partisan report that accused former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat of offering “personal protection” to certain officials — a political smear copied straight from PN propaganda.
Then, in December 2019, Omtzigt dropped his mask of neutrality altogether.
He called Malta’s democratic Labour Government “a shameless regime.”
That was not diplomacy; that was open contempt. The words of a foreign politician trying to delegitimise Malta’s government and insult the Maltese people who voted for it.

Rosianne Cutajar
The Rosianne Cutajar Affair – Omtzigt’s Never-Ending Meddling
Even after his official mandate ended, Omtzigt continued interfering in Maltese affairs.
In April 2022, he wrote to the Chairperson of the PACE Committee on Rules of Procedure, demanding an investigation into Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar.
This was not the action of a neutral observer — it was another attack on a Maltese representative by a foreign politician acting on PN-fed gossip.
Cutajar had already temporarily resigned from her post as Parliamentary Secretary, yet Omtzigt saw an opportunity to once again tarnish Malta’s name internationally.
His behaviour revealed his true obsession: Omtzigt cannot stop attacking Malta’s Labour Government.
Instead of focusing on his own domestic responsibilities, he continues using European platforms to slander our country. That is not oversight — that is harassment.
A Man in Crisis – Rejected by His Own Party
Before lecturing Malta on morality, Omtzigt should remember his own record at home.
In 2021, his own Dutch party — the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) — turned against him in a brutal internal report, describing him in their own words as:
“a psychopath, a sick man, a jerk, disturbed, unstable — impossible to work with, someone who urgently needs help.”
These were not the words of political opponents — they came from his own party colleagues, the people who knew him best.
The CDA leadership itself admitted that Omtzigt’s erratic behaviour and psychological instability made cooperation impossible. Shortly after, he left the party in disgrace.
And yet, this is the same man who dares to call Malta’s elected government “shameless.”
A politician who was rejected by his own party as unstable has no moral authority to lecture any other nation on integrity, democracy, or governance.
The EPP’s Mouthpiece in Valletta
Every time Omtzigt visits Malta, the pattern repeats: he is hosted by Repubblika, Occupy Justice, and the Daphne Foundation, who use him to give foreign cover to their local hate campaign.
His appearance at the Daphne Caruana Galizia Memorial Lecture in October 2025, promoted by the same activists who desecrated the Great Siege Monument, was yet another insult to the Maltese nation.
This is not democracy — it is an imported propaganda network where Omtzigt plays the role of the self-righteous foreign saviour, preaching morality while his own record at home collapses under hypocrisy and instability.

Pieter Omtzigt’s arrogance knows no bounds.
His own party called him disturbed and unstable — yet he still dares to call Malta’s democratic government a ‘shameless regime.’
This is not a man of principle. This is a man obsessed with Malta and consumed by his hatred for Labour.
Malta’s sovereignty is not a toy for failed Dutch politicians or their PN allies. Our dignity is not for sale.”
