In the shadowy corridors of Malta’s healthcare system, Pawlu Pace, the embattled President of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) has long been a figure of controversy and contempt.
For years, we’ve known him as a brazen tax thief, shamelessly demanding overtime payments even while lounging on private vacations abroad. Official investigations and court records paint a damning picture: Pace was arraigned in 2025 on charges of fraud and misappropriation after allegedly filing €4,000 in bogus overtime claims, including while on holiday in Egypt.
He pleaded not guilty, but the evidence from health ministry probes shows he pocketed tens of thousands in undue allowances, even from overseas, treating public funds like his personal piggy bank.
But Pace’s sins run deeper than mere financial grift. He’s admitted to behaviors that scream fraud, yet he clings to power like a leech on a dying patient. His heartlessness is no secret. He’s repeatedly issued union directives that jeopardize patient care, prioritizing petty disputes over lives.
In December 2025, MUMN under Pace ordered nurses to halt cardiac operations, a move Mater Dei Hospital blasted as disproportionate and life-threatening. Pace’s own actions reveal a man willing to weaponize healthcare workers against the vulnerable, all while claiming to represent them.
What we weren’t entirely sure of until now, but the proof is irrefutable, is that Pawlu Pace is a prime liar, unfit to lead even a lemonade stand, let alone a union of dedicated nurses.
In a brazen outburst amid an industrial dispute, Pace accused the government of cancelling elective heart surgeries over the festive period just so doctors could take holiday leave. A heinous, fabricated smear designed to inflame tensions and deflect from his own failures.

Yet, the evidence shreds his narrative to pieces. Consultant Cardiologist Caroline Jane Magri, a respected interventional specialist at Mater Dei, publicly contradicted him on social media, exposing his claim as an “ABYSMAL LIE” generated by Pawlu Pace.

Kelvin Cortis
Doctor Kelvin Cortis, in a TVM News interview, revealed the opposite: heart interventions actually doubled during the Christmas period, with urgent services running non-stop.

Jo Etienne Abela
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela slammed the accusations as baseless, emphasizing that the ministry’s court action against MUMN was solely about patient safety, not holiday perks.
Even Mater Dei Hospital issued a scathing statement denying any halt to elective procedures, with data showing increased activity over the holidays—directly refuting Pace’s fiction.

And now, the Medical Association of Malta (MAM), the doctors’ union, has joined the chorus, firmly rejecting Pace’s claims that procedures were axed for vacations. Their statement underscores the truth: no cancellations for leave occurred; Pace’s words were pure invention.
In the face of this overwhelming repudiation from experts, officials, and institutions, Pace’s position is untenable. Whispers in union circles suggest his resignation is imminent—or should be. After all, how can a man mired in fraud charges, proven greed, and now exposed lies continue to “represent” nurses? Malta’s healthcare workers deserve better than this charlatan.

Pace’s reign of deceit must end; it’s time for him to step down and face the accountability he so richly deserves.
MUMN, under fresh leadership, could refocus on genuine advocacy rather than Pace’s personal vendettas. Until then, patients and taxpayers alike suffer the consequences of his incompetence and dishonesty.
