Speaking in the annual foreign policy debate in the Saeima on January 29th, Foreign Minister Baiba Braže made a clear statement regarding Latvia’s immigration policy, saying that the country “will not accept new migrants.”

“The [border] fence is complete, and I thank the border guards, national guards and other services for their selfless work 24/7, every day and night, preventing more than 12,000 instrumentalized migrants from reaching Latvia. We are ready to share our experience and expertise with other European countries within the framework of the Solidarity Mechanism. But, as the Minister of Internal Affairs has already emphasized, Latvia will not accept new migrants and will not pay for them. We will provide support and assistance to other countries,” she said.
