New MRI Scanner Powers SVP’s Transformation into Specialised Elderly Hospital

€1.8 Million Investment Marks Major Leap in Elderly Healthcare Transformation

San Vinċenz de Paul Hospital (SVP) has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art MRI scanner, the sixth in Malta, marking a key milestone in its ongoing transformation into a specialised geriatric hospital.

Over the past three years, the Labour Government, under the leadership of Parliamentary Secretary for the Active Elderly Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, has reshaped SVP from a traditional elderly residence into a modern facility focused on comprehensive geriatric care. Upgrades have included renovated wards with dementia-friendly design, an expanded Intermediate Care unit, new palliative care services, and specialised clinics, reducing the need for transfers to other hospitals.

The new MRI scanner, installed in the Day Hospital, is a €1.8 million investment, partly funded by EU funds. It forms part of the Government’s efforts to deliver more accessible and reliable health services for older people.

The facility serves SVP residents as well as all patients aged over 60. Equipped with the latest technology tailored for elderly patients, it ensures safer, faster, and more comfortable scans.

This addition brings the total investment in radiological services at SVP to over €5 million. The hospital expects at least 5,000 people to benefit from the scanner. Plans are already underway to introduce an ultrasound scanner and a bone density scanner.

Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea stressed the importance of these investments, noting that around one quarter of Malta’s population is in the aged sector.

“It makes perfect sense for the Government to continue investing in this sector,” he said. “Our elderly deserve the best possible care, and we remain committed to delivering modern, high-quality health services at San Vinċenz de Paul Hospital.”

The new MRI scanner highlights the Labour Government’s dedication to building a robust healthcare system tailored to Malta’s ageing population, ensuring elderly citizens receive specialised, dignified care in a familiar environment.
