Digital Innovation in the Community

Less than a year ago, in July 2025, Active Ageing and Community Care within the Parliamentary Secretariat for Active Ageing successfully launched a pilot project through which residents in elderly care homes began experiencing virtual reality technology firsthand.

This initiative was very well received, with virtual reality also proving popular during roadshows held in town squares across various localities, where members of the public had the opportunity to engage directly with this innovative technology.

Thanks to further investment, this technology is now available at the 36 Active Ageing Centres across Malta, allowing more seniors to experience and benefit from this innovation in a practical and accessible way.

While visiting the Active Ageing Centre in Ħal Qormi, the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, praised the expansion of community services and encouraged continued progress towards a more active, engaged, and digitally inclusive ageing population.

He stated:

“Technology will play a key role in improving the quality of life of our elderly, supporting independent and safe living.”

This initiative marks another important step towards modern, inclusive services for older persons, placing innovation at the centre of community care.
Further projects and investments are already in progress, aimed at strengthening infrastructure, expanding services, and ensuring that more elderly individuals remain active, connected, and supported within their communities.
