I returned home today after undergoing tests at Gozo General Hospital, feeling grateful to the people who cared for me—and angry at the unfair picture so often painted of this hospital.
After years of hearing degrading remarks and what I consider biased commentary, I had been led to expect a hospital in a state of neglect. What I encountered left me speechless, for entirely different reasons.
The hospital was exceptionally clean. The staff were dedicated, attentive and caring. The spacious surroundings and wide corridors added to a reassuring atmosphere, while the people looking after me made a difficult day easier through their professionalism and kindness.
Yes, it is an old building. But the age of a building does not erase the value of the service provided within its walls. From what I experienced today, there is much here that deserves recognition and respect.
Whether Gozo needs a larger hospital to meet the demands of today’s population is a separate and legitimate discussion. That debate should never overshadow the efforts of those who care for patients and keep the existing hospital clean, welcoming and functioning every day.
Criticism has its place. Hospitals must be scrutinised, and shortcomings must be addressed. But sweeping attacks that dismiss an entire institution are unfair to the dedicated people working inside it. Those who are always ready to condemn should also be ready to acknowledge good service when it is delivered.
Today, I saw dedication. I experienced compassion. And I found a hospital very different from the one years of negative commentary had led me to imagine.
To all the staff who looked after me today, and to those whose work keeps Gozo General Hospital running: thank you. Your efforts deserve appreciation, and I will not let them pass unacknowledged.
Keep up the good work.
