Parliamentary Petition Regarding Trial of Maltese Citizens in Malta

A parliamentary petition has been launched regarding the trial of Maltese citizens in Malta for crimes committed within the country.

The petition, spearheaded by Lucienne Meli Bellizzi, the mother of Daniel Meli, aims to ensure that Maltese citizens who commit crimes in Malta are tried and sentenced within the country, even if the crimes have affected individuals overseas.

Daniel Meli, who is currently facing extradition proceedings to the US, initially agreed to the extradition but later appealed, citing concerns about his mental state and lack of awareness regarding the potential consequences he could face in the US. The possibility of a 45-year prison sentence and a hefty fine has understandably caused distress to his family.

In response to this case, the Maltese Parliament has made amendments to the law, allowing individuals facing extradition to challenge the proceedings at a later stage, even if they had initially consented.

The petition is open for signatures until 8 February and will be presented to the Minister of Justice.

The petition can be signed on parliament’s web site 👇

Your support in signing this petition would be greatly appreciated in ensuring that Maltese citizens are given a fair trial within their own country.
