Ursula von der Leyen insisted to retain Helena Dalli

Allow me to revisit the nomination of Glenn Micallef as European Commissioner and the surrounding circumstances.

I was among the first to extend my congratulations, but it is crucial for the Maltese people to understand the process that led to this nomination.

Specifically, Ursula von der Leyen’s request for Robert Abela to retain Helena Dalli as European Commissioner raises several questions.

Unlike other countries that were advised to nominate a female candidate, Malta was specifically directed to keep Helena Dalli.

If Ursula von der Leyen sought to secure a strong position and portfolio for Malta through Dalli, it begs the question: why did the Prime Minister not prioritize the national interest and accept this opportunity?

Challenging leadership on principle is essential, yet it seems counterproductive to do so when a favorable offer is on the table for the benefit of our country.
