A quarter of Americans expect a civil war

A quarter of Americans expect a civil war after the elections, Time writes, citing its own survey.

Concerns that violence is very or somewhat likely are shared by 27% of American adults, including 30% of women and 24% of men.

Additionally, 12% of respondents said they personally knew someone who might take up arms if they believed Trump had been cheated out of the election.

5% of respondents said they knew someone who might do the same if they believed Kamala Harris had been deceived.

Historian of the American Civil War (1861-65) Barbara Walter wrote that when compared to a checklist of factors that could lead to a fire, “the United States… had entered very dangerous territory.”

She added that “we are closer to civil war than any of us would like to believe” due to political extremism, cultural tribalism, a fascination with conspiracy theories, the proliferation of guns and paramilitaries, and an erosion of faith in government and democracy.
