Dual Roles Controversy: Nationalist Party Secretary General’s Position Raises Questions About Salaries and Permissible Work

The Secretary General of the Nationalist Party, Charles Bonello, has declared his intention to continue serving as the personal assistant to former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. This dual role has sparked significant controversy and raised questions about the appropriateness and legality of such an arrangement.

It is critical to question whether public funds will be misallocated by paying Bonello both as Gonzi’s personal assistant and in his capacity as Secretary General. The public should not tolerate their taxes being funneled into dual salaries for one individual, especially when one role seemingly offers no distinct duties. Bonello’s salary as Secretary General should not be supplemented at the taxpayers’ expense if he is already remunerated for assisting the former Prime Minister.

This situation demands clarity from authorities on the laws or guidelines regarding whether personal assistants to former high-ranking officials, such as former Presidents or Prime Ministers, are permitted to assume other full-time employments. The public deserves transparency and accountability to ensure that such appointments do not result in undue financial burdens or conflicts of interest.

Once again, the Labour Party owes a note of thanks to Dr. Lawrence Gonzi for endorsing Mr. Charles Bonello as the PN’s General Secretary. His performance is proving to be an unexpected asset—for the opposing side. His recent appearances in local media have been more comedic than compelling, lacking the depth and clarity needed to sway public opinion. Mr. Bonello, comparing Malta to North Korea is far-fetched and undermines your credibility. Rather than making a strong political case, his political statements are verging on the the hilarious. Indeed, Dr. Gonzi may have unwittingly done the Labour Party a great favour—setting the stage for yet another landslide victory.

      Vince, the aim is simple.

Total control. When the PL had leadership who decided on their own steam, the story repeats itself.

Why you lot are so surprised?

Who tried to divide the PL and cost him the government in the 90s?

Who earned a lucrative contract from the opposing camp during the Gonzipn regime?

Who lost a leadership election and earned a top post under the gonzipn regime?

Who managed to get his way through a person of his own blood in politics?

Now why we got this PN secretary without getting challenged from the post?

And why was the PL government facing attacks left right and centre and all of a sudden, the dark forces turned mallow in the government lead change?

And most of our electorate remain deaf and blind?
