The University of Malta has confirmed that the thesis of Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, contained plagiarized sections. Yet, the University Senate, in a baffling move, has decided not to invalidate her thesis. This decision, despite the glaring evidence, only diminishes her academic accolade and places Metsola in an undoubtedly shameful spotlight.
But that’s not all. With this outrageous decision, the University of Malta is practically screaming from the rooftops that cheating isn’t really a concern. Here’s my burning question for the University: are they going to graciously pardon everyone caught in the act of cheating? It’s a scandal waiting to explode, and one has to wonder what kind of precedent this sets for academic integrity at such a reputed institution.
