PAWLU PACE UNDER FIRE: TROUBLE IN THE EFN OVER CONTROVERSIAL MEETINGS

Monday, 24 March: In a move that can only be described as a public relations disaster waiting to happen, Pawlu Pace, the embattled leader of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN), made an unpublicized and shadowy trip to Brussels to meet with none other than European Parliament powerhouse Roberta Metsola. Is our beleaguered union head simply trying to shore up his defenses, or does he have something more sinister up his sleeve?

Fast forward to 9 April, and Pace was airborne once again, jetting off to Brussels under the radar. Armed with my eagle-eyed insight, I nailed the prediction: Pace had wormed his way into a gathering of the European Federation of Nurses (EFN). This, despite the fact that EFN insiders had whispered their hopes that Pace might just conveniently vanish from the scene.

But guess who showed up to represent MUMN at the highly-anticipated EFN meeting on 10 and 11 April? None other than Pace himself, the president whose name is being whispered in corridors for all the wrong reasons—he’s currently embroiled in a criminal investigation. And yet, the MUMN brazenly sent him as their face of integrity.

I’ve got the scoop: the EFN’s invitation wasn’t even addressed to Pace. It was intended for Colin Galea. Even more shockingly, the EFN’s very own President, Dr. Aristides Chorattas, was reportedly not thrilled with the dubious choice of Pace as a delegate, given his looming legal woes and the potential fraud charges hanging over his head like a storm cloud.

Other unions within the EFN are reportedly seething, baffled as to why Pace is still allowed to prance around unscathed when their own members have faced severely punitive measures for less glaring infractions. What gives the union president this VIP pass to immunity, they wonder?

There’s a whiff of controversy that’s fanning out across Europe with whispers questioning just how untouchable the title of union president actually makes you.
