Subject: Urgent Concern Regarding Dr. Robert Aquilina – Notary of the Archdiocese

I am writing to bring to your immediate attention a matter of serious concern involving Dr. Robert Aquilina, who presently serves as Notary to the Archdiocese of Malta.

It has been reported in the public domain that Dr. Aquilina was interrogated under arrest by the Malta Police in connection with serious domestic violence allegations filed by his wife. The complaint reportedly includes physical assault, threats, and prolonged psychological abuse — including incidents of confinement and coercive control. These claims prompted immediate involvement by the Domestic Violence Unit.

As part of standard procedure, a risk assessment was conducted, which determined that the risk to the victim’s life is high and extremely concerning.

Given the moral and ethical responsibilities expected of those who serve in official roles within the Church, I believe that Dr. Aquilina’s continued position as Notary is no longer tenable. While due process in civil law must be respected, the Church’s own pastoral and moral framework calls for greater vigilance, especially when trust and institutional integrity are at stake.

Your Excellency, I urge the Archdiocese to take immediate and transparent steps in addressing this matter in light of Church teaching and public accountability. The Church must remain a safe haven for the vulnerable and a beacon of integrity to the faithful.
